An ever growing NUDGE team

The teams here!

As one of the first members of the new Nudge team I've had some lonely days in the office! However, that’s all changed and with an ever-growing team, we’re about to burst out of our first office!

So who’s here?
Our team has been created in a multidisciplinary manner, to utilise a wide range of skills and expertise. It's becoming more accepted that teams of multi-skilled people working together will generate more ideas than individuals working alone, and with my back-ground being in product design, I’ve worked in this manner for many years and have seen the benefits.

Here’s a great video that explains the benefits of working in a team to help create good ideas...

On the team so far we have…
Kathryn Eccles, Digital social researcher.
Elizabeth Woodcock , our sustainability officer
Shem, (moi), UX Designer
Latest new additions…
Paul Carter, Psychologist
Philip Nelson, Psychologist
Andrew Thomas, Electrical engineer and sustainability

…and due to start next week Andrew Thomas, a software engineer.

That’s not to forget Dr John Parkinson, Dr Carl Hughes and David Menichino our Directors/Academics and management team.
As well as working in a multidisciplinary team, we'll be running projects using theory's from design principle. Some people call this 'Design Thinking', Put simply, I like to think of it as looking at a problem from 'outside of the box' to design a solution of greater value.

Dr Andy Goodman of Bangor University is also working along side the team, and his 'MUD' base structure has been used to help construct the team

The same structure has been used to form the 'Enterprise by Design' project within Bangor University.

Rather than ramble on, here's another video that explains Design & Thinking...

Projects and partners are stacking up thick and fast, and the range of projects are as diverse as the team itself. More to come on these very soon!

Welcome to my Wales Behaviour Change Blog

So…
I’m Shem… Outside of work I’m a keen mountain biker and lover of all things “BIKE”.  If I’m not cycling, Ill either be spending time with my family, skate boarding or surfing/kitesurfing.

My role here at the WCBC is as a UX designer, however, as with most of us in the WCBC team, I have an interest in many of the other areas within the centre, including sustainabilty, consumer psychology and telling story’s  using various forms of multimedia.

With a back ground in manufacture and product design, I’ll be keeping you up to date with our latest products, services and multi-media. I’ll also be looking at all things techy, especially behaviour change products and apps. I’m especially interested in products that alter people’s behaviour and attitudes towards sustainability and energy saving, and also ‘Nudge’s’ that increase motivation in sports.
Over the coming weeks the other members of the team will be starting their blogs in relevant areas, so please keep a look out and take a look at their blogs as well. The organisations we’re working with are so varied there’ll be something to interest every one!

For now, here’s one of my favourite behaviour change products...

The flower lamp works in the same way that a home energy meter does. However, instead of giving you a power output reading, the lamp rewards the user by opening up and delivering more light when low energy is being used...and you guessed it, closes when a large amount of power is consumed.
A visual incentive to live more sustainably and use less power!

The main website is still under construction, for now see here for more information about the Wales Behaviour Change Centre

Thanks for taking a look!
